I'm not sure about the origin of this delicious treat, but let me assure you it's very more-ish and also very easy to make. It's a goody to make for Thanksgiving (which is celebrated this week in the U.S.) or for edible Christmas gifts - your friends will love you.
- Nabisco Premium Original Crackers - 125g (1/2 packet)
- brown sugar (or dark brown sugar) - 3/4 cup
- unsalted butter - 185g
- good -quality dark, milk or white chocolate buttons - approx 200g
- flaked almonds - toasted (or 100s & 1000s)
Preheat oven to 200 deg C (180degC fan forced)..
Line a baking tray with baking paper or foil and spread crackers salt side up – make sure they’re lying flat.
In a medium saucepan, place sugar and butter over low heat and stir until sugar has dissolved. Allow to boil for a couple of minutes.
Pour over crackers and place in the oven for five minutes - no longer. Remove from oven and scatter chocolate buttons over the caramel.
Allow to soften for a minute or so then spread with the back of a spoon.
Sprinkle over nuts or 100s and 1000s (if using). Place in refrigerator for three hours or freeze for one hour.
Break up into pieces and keep in an airtight container.
For edible gifts, place pieces in tins or cellophane bags and tie with a ribbon.
